No distance runner in the last decade has entered college with expectations higher than those placed upon Jordan Hasay.

The wunderkind from California’s Central Coast was very much a product of the Dyestat-driven internet age, capturing the hearts of prep followers with her signature flowing blonde hair and bubbly personality.

But despite the promising future many saw in Hasay, she’s been unable to break the infamous Foot Locker curse – no female Foot Locker champion has ever claimed an individual NCAA cross country title.

Hasay’s career at Oregon thus far certainly hasn’t been a disappointment. She’s finished third and second, respectively, at the last two NCAA cross country championships, the victim of a stalwart opponent in Villanova’s Sheila Reid.

On the surface, Reid’s graduation would indicate Hasay is the national title heir apparent in 2012.

Not so fast. A number of Hasay’s opponents made major statements on the track last spring about their own prowess.

Abbey D’Agostino not only won her first NCAA title in the 5000 meters but nearly snuck onto the Olympic team in the same event. Her 5000 personal best of 15:19.98 bests Hasay’s time by 17 seconds.

Although Iowa State’s Betsy Saina redshirted last track season, she had a huge breakthrough while winning the prestigious 10,000 meter race at the Payton Jordan Invitational. Saina has proven herself this cross country season with consistently strong performances in each of her races.

Hasay may have caught a break with D’Agostino missing time with a hip injury but the emergence of fellow Golden Stater Laura Hollander of Cal Poly serves as yet another barrier to her dream of standing atop the medal stand in Louisville.

With all these obstacles in her way, how can Hasay possibly win this Saturday?

In my mind, the question should really be, how can Hasay NOT win?

Sure, she started the season off slowly with a subpar race at the Dellinger Invitational and a mediocre performance two weeks later at Pre-Nationals.

Since then, she’s been stellar. Hasay bravely fought through a case of food poisoning at the Pac-12 championships to finish just seconds behind winner Kathy Kroeger and lead the Ducks to their first team title since 1995.

Last Friday at the West Regional, Hasay patiently hunted down the front-running Hollander to claim a six second victory over the super frosh in a blistering 19:16 for six kilometers.

Much like the Georgetown women’s team that peaked at precisely the right moment last year, Hasay appears primed to run her best on November 17, the only day of the season that really counts.

California is the most dominant state in the nation in track and field/running, but with meets upon meets going on every weekend, it can be difficult to keep track with all that’s going on. With the California weekend wrap-up, we will do our best to provide you the news from the weekend in a succinct fashion. MARTINEZ CONTINUES MILE WINNING STREAK

Brenda Martinez has been on a roll in the post-Olympic racing cycle and continued her success with a win at the season-ending Fifth Avenue Mile Saturday in New York City. The Big Bear Lake, Calif. resident made a big surge with less than a quarter-mile remaining to break away from the field and win in a time of 4:24.2. Anna Pierce of the Mammoth Track Club was second in 4:24.9 and Britain’s Hannah England was third in 4:26.0.

“I felt confident,” Martinez told New York Road Runners after the race. “I’ve learned to be patient—I just got in a rhythm, and with 200 meters to go, I kicked for my life and ran like a maniac.”

The win in the streets of New York is Martinez’s third consecutive victory over the mile distance. She won the Falmouth Elite Mile in a world leading 4:26.76 back on August 11 and more recently defeated a slew of Olympians in the road mile at the Great North City Games in England. Martinez also dipped under the two minute barrier in the 800 meters twice this summer, first at the Zagreb World Challenge meeting and then at the Brussels Diamond League competition, setting her current personal best of 1:59.14 in the latter race.

ELLIOTT HEATH BEATS OLDER BROTHER GARRETT FOR FIRST TIME

Elliott Heath will have some bragging rights against older brother Garrett come this holiday season in the Heath household. The Stanford graduates have raced each other plenty of times but not until Saturday at Fifth Avenue did the younger Elliott defeat his elder brother, according to the Twitter feed of NYRR elite athlete coordinator Sam Grotewold. Elliott finished eighth in 3:54.3 while Garrett was ninth just a tenth of a second behind.

This summer has been full of changes for both Winona, Minn. natives. Elliott recently joined the Oregon Track Club-Portland under the tutelage of Jerry Schumacher while Garrett was brought on as a member of the Stanford cross country coaching staff.

VISITING NORTHERN ARIZONA MEN, TEXAS WOMEN VICTORIOUS AT PAC-12 PREVIEW

The inaugural cross country race on the Robinson Ranch Golf Course played host to the Pac-12 Preview meet on Friday afternoon in Santa Clarita, Calif. The same course will be home to the Pac-12 Cross Country Championships on October 27.

Led by individual winner Brian Shader, the men of Northern Arizona made the trip down from Flagstaff to score 26 points for a dominant victory over host UCLA (58 points) and third place Arizona State (66 points). Futsum Zeinnasellassie, the nation’s top high school recruit last year, made his collegiate debut for the Lumberjacks in second place.

Texas convincingly won the women’s contest with 56 points behind the 3-4 finishes of Sara Sutherland and Marielle Hall. UC Davis and Northern Arizona tied for second place in the team standings. Cal Poly freshman Laura Hollander, the #2 high school 3200 meter runner in 2012, won her first race in the Mustang uniform in a time of 17:02 ahead of Sarah Sumpter of UC Davis.

USF WOMEN SECOND AT TOLEDO BUBBLE BUSTER

The University of San Francisco returned to the Toledo Inter-Regional Bubble Buster meet for the second straight year and again walked away with strong finishes. In the first weekend teams could accumulate at-large points for the NCAA meet, the meet brought together teams from around the country in hopes of boosting their hopes to qualify for the national championships in Louisville.

Competing without two of their top runners, the Don women finished second to Butler, 72 points to 86 points, but ahead of national meet hopefuls Columbia (92 points), Toledo (98 points) and Syracuse (104 points). The USF men’s team was third with 68 points behind Syracuse (20 points) and Eastern Michigan (50 points).

CAL COMPETES AT PANORAMA FARMS INVITATIONAL IN VIRGINIA

The Cal cross country teams travelled across the country to the University of Virginia’s Panorama Farms Invitational where the Golden Bear women were fourth while the men were sixth.

STANFORD INVITATIONAL ON TAP 

The 39th edition of the Stanford Cross Country Invitational is this upcoming Saturday, September 23 at the Stanford University Golf Course. The meet will pit some of California’s premier collegiate teams, including host Stanford, Cal-Berkeley, Cal Poly, USF, UC Davis and Chico State as well as top high school teams from throughout the state. The men’s 8000 meter race will start at 9:50AM and the women’s 6000 meter race will begin at 10:30AM.
