In honor of President’s Day, we’ve been tweeting a bunch on intersections between running and politics. Below is a story that I recalled reading in 2009 and was able to dig up thanks to the help of Merhawi Keflezighi of Hawi Sports Management.
It is well known that President Barack Obama is an avid basketball fan but does he dabble his sporting knowledge in the world of running as well?
While on a run in the summer of 2007, Mario Arce, a frequent pacer for Meb Keflezighi, was passed by a slender man who notced Arce was “moving pretty fast for a big guy,” as Arce weighs 250 pounds. When Arce mentioned he trains with Olympians, the man asked “who, Meb?”
Arce later found out the man was then-Senator and now President Barack Obama.
Pretty neat story. Perhaps President Obama will be in London this summer to cheer Meb on.
