Two-time Olympian Dathan Ritzenhein is the headliner for Thursday morning’s Applied Materials Silicon Valley Turkey Trot 5k in San Jose, Calif.
The former U.S. 5000 meter record holder will contest his second road 5k in a matter of weeks after finishing third at the NYRR Dash to the Finish Line 5k on November 5. Ritzenhein is preparing for the Olympic Trials Marathon on January 14 in Houston.
Ritzenhein is coached by Alberto Salazar as part of the Nike Oregon Project in Portland. Last year, two Salazar-trained runners Alan Webb and Galen Rupp placed first and second, respectively, in San Jose. Webb set the course record of 13 minutes, 36 seconds.
Also in the elite men’s field are former NCAA 5000 meter champion David McNeill, University of Arizona standout Stephen Sambu and Northern Arizona senior Diego Estrada who finished seventh at Monday’s NCAA cross country championships.
Former University of Washington All-American Katie Follett leads the women’s field. Jackie Areson and Alvina Begay, two Nike Oregon Project athletes, are also entered.
Sally Kipyego, the 2011 World 10,000 meter silver medalist for Kenya, holds the course record of 15 minutes, 41 seconds set in 2009.
