Viewer’s Guide To Day 7 Of The IAAF World Championships

As we round the final turn of the World Championships, we begin to see fewer preliminary rounds and evening sessions more dense with finals.

Four Americans have qualified for the men’s shot put finals including defending champion Christian Cantwell.  Canadian Dylan Armstrong and Olympic champion Tomasz Majewski of Poland will look to break up any potential U.S. sweep.  Germany’s Christina Obergföll and Barbora Špotáková of the Czech Republic are perennial favorites in the women’s javelin.  Berlin World champ Dwight Phillips hasn’t looked great all season until he launched a 8.32 meter jump in the prelims.  Mitchell Watt of Australia and double NCAA champ Ngonidzashe Makusha from Zimbabwe should also be in contention.

The big question in the women’s 5k will be whether Vivian Cheruiyot can complete the 5k/10k double.  The women’s 200 will be a titanic battle between three-time defending champ Allyson Felix, double Olympic gold medalist Veronica Campbell-Brown and 100 meter World champion Carmelita Jeter.  The men’s 4×400 should be an easy gold for the United States.
