Who Said Track Isn’t a Contact Sport? Fisticuffs Ensue in Monaco

The fist fight that broke out between French athletes Medhi Baala and Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad after the men’s 1500 meters in Monaco will likely go down in history as track’s slightly tamer equivalent of the Ron Artest’s Malice at the Palace.

The storyline behind the brawl is that Baala trains with French steepler Bob Tarhi, a fierce rival of Mekhissi-Benabbad, the 2008 Olympic steeplechase silver medalist. They two likely didn’t have any friendly words after the race, prompting Baala to pull a trick from the book of Zinedine Zidane and headbutt his opponent. Mekhissi-Benabbad didn’t take the action well and proceeded to throw several punches at Baala, none of which landed cleanly.
