According to a tweet from esteemed track and field broadcaster Ato Boldon, Tyson Gay has pulled out of the USA Track and Field Championships and thus will not qualify for Team USA at the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea. The cited reason for withdrawal is a hip and adductor injury.
Gay qualified into the semifinals of the 100 meter dash yesterday by finishing second in the fifth section of the preliminary heats. The 2007 double World Champion was scheduled to run the 100 meter semifinals this afternoon.
According to USA Track and Field rules, Gay is still eligible to run the 4×100 meter relay having run one round of the 100 meters.
The loss of Gay not only hampers American chances at medalling in Daegu, but will also deprive fans of the Usain Bolt-Tyson Gay match-up that many have looked forward to.
