Allyson Felix was the consensus favorite heading into the women’s 400 meters at the Prefontaine Classic coming off Diamond League wins in Doha and Rome but instead struggled against an elite field on Saturday. After nearly being disqualified for a false start, the three-time 200 meter World champion did not get out well as Amantle Montsho of Botswana bolted out from the start and established a big lead coming around the final bend. Felix’s fatigue from trotting the globe over the last few weeks was evident as she had nothing left to respond.
The windy conditions of Hayward Field resulted in a fairly slow winning time of 50.59 seconds for Montsho. Felix was passed in the final meters by Debbie Dunn for second place.
