Usain Bolt opened up his 2011 season with a fairly average performance for his standards but still managed to get the win in the 100 meters at the Rome Golden Gala. In front of a massive crowd of 47,732 fans at the third leg of the Diamond League circuit, Bolt overcame a slow start to just eek by countryman Asafa Powell over the last 20 meters in a time of 9.91 seconds. Powell was second in 9.93 seconds while France’s Christophe Lemaitre was third in 10.00 seconds.
Bolt’s lackluster performance puts into question his fitness at this point of the season. Although it is only the end of May, Tyson Gay has already proven he is in shape with his 14.51 second straightaway 150 meter dash in Manchester. After cruising to championship wins in 2008 and 2009, Usain Bolt must realize that his dominance has motivated others to up the ante in their training. He must do the same now to keep up with Gay and the multitudes of others gunning for him.
