Canadian shot putter Dylan Armstrong broke his own national record on his way to winning the UCSD Triton Invitational on Saturday afternoon. His top mark of 21.72 meters (71 feet, 3 3/4 inches) bested his prior Canadian record of 21.58 meters from June 2, 2010. Armstrong threw over 21 meters on three other attempts, a significant feat in the six-throw competition.
Armstrong’s achievement came just a few days after he won the shot put at the Kansas Relays with a throw of 21.52 meters (70 feet, 7 1/4 inches). The unique event was hosted on the streets of Lawrence, Kansas and featured blasting rock music and an energetic crowd in support of the athletes.
The female Canadian record was also tied on Saturday by the University of Arizona’s Julie Lebonte. Her personal best throw of 17.83m (58 feet, 6 inches) puts her second of the all-time Wildcats list. Find the entire press release courtesy of the U of A sports information department here.
