UC Irvine junior Charles Jock defeated a strong field in the men’s 800 meters to set a new personal best time of 1:45.19, the nation’s leading time so far in 2011. The race was paced by Saucony pro Duane Solomon through 600 meters in 1:16. In second place was the fast-charging Fred Samoei of Alabama, the NCAA indoor champion, while Tetlo Emmen was third.
Maggie Vessey made her 800 meter season debut with a victory in her typical sit-and-kick fashion as she overlook early leader Lea Wallace of Sacramento State on the final straightaway. Her winning time of 2:02.51 was over half a second ahead of Lindsey Schnell of Brooks while Wallace faded to third.
